What is the expected impact of the proposed project on the climate and environment (both throughout the project and beyond)?

The proposed Transnational Synergy project is committed to minimizing its environmental impact by promoting sustainable academic practices. A key strategy is the significant reduction of carbon emissions by emphasizing remote PhD programs and virtual collaboration instead of travel. Additionally, the project encourages the integration of environmental sustainability into research agendas, fostering climate-conscious academic initiatives. These efforts will not only reduce the immediate environmental impact of the project but will also raise long-term awareness of environmental issues in both the UK and Pakistan, promoting sustainable development and responsible research practices well beyond the project’s duration.

If travel is planned, please provide justification why travel is essential to ensure project outcomes and impact

The proposed project Transnational Synergy requires planned travel to the UK and Pakistan for deep, personal exposure between the UK and Pakistani academics working together to ensure that all goals of the collaboration are in line and the relations are fruitful. Face-to-face interaction in the form of initial workshops and conferences is most necessary for gaining trust and setting research goals. Besides, site visits would allow hands-on mentorship or training, an essential ingredient in the successful implementation of remote PhD programs and leadership initiatives. Although travel will be kept to a minimum, these are key interactions to achieve the project’s objectives, maximize impact, and ensure that the collaborative frameworks and skills developed are robust and long-lasting.

What measures will you take to minimise the impact on the environment or limit the carbon footprint of travel?

Recognizing the global shift towards low carbon emissions and reducing carbon footprints, the Transnational Synergy project will implement several measures to minimize environmental impact. These include prioritizing virtual meetings and workshops to reduce travel, strategically planning necessary travel to minimize frequency and maximize efficiency and opting for low-carbon transportation when travel is unavoidable. Additionally, participants will be encouraged to adopt eco-friendly practices, such as carbon offsetting and choosing sustainable accommodations. These initiatives are integrated into the project to balance essential travel with a strong commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable development.
